What Are Digital Gardens

  • Digital gardens are a paradigm of writing on the internet alternative to the "blog" or "stream" model: pieces of writing in reverse chronological order (with recency bias, publish & forget flaws).
  • Digital gardens are:
    • A) interlinked with backlinks—links that flow both directions so you can navigate and explore
    • B) intended to be a living work in progress, always evolving and developing. think "seed", "sprout" "evergreen/tree"
  • I first discovered digital gardens from Maggie Appleton. They were a concept i didn't know i was searching for, as I wanted to write essays but also make something of all of the little insights and notes and fragments of ideas I've been making.
